Fusão de duas
estrelas de nêutrons
Merger of two
neutron stars

The chirp of GW170817. Two stars spiral in, spacetime responds, and the wave frequency climbs until they touch. Where that happens is no detail: it depends on the stellar radius, that is, on the equation of state of nuclear matter.

During the inspiral the wave frequency depends on a single combination of the two masses, the chirp mass 𝓜c = (m1m2)3/5 / (m1+m2)1/5. With a time τ left before contact,

fGW = (1/π) (5 / 256τ)3/8 (G𝓜c/c³)−5/8

and the separation shrinks as r ∝ τ1/4. The wave carries energy away, the orbit tightens in response, and the frequency therefore climbs on its own: that is the chirp. The amplitude follows, h ∝ fGW2/3, and the wave arrives at twice the orbital frequency, fGW = 2forb, because an orbiting mass repeats the same configuration twice per turn.

Here is the difference that matters. Two black holes are points: the inspiral runs on to the innermost stable orbit, at r = 6GM/c², and ends in a ringdown. Neutron stars have size. They touch when the separation reaches R1+R2 — and for GW170817 those two distances are comparable, about 23 and 24 km. Above R = 3GM/c², near 12 km, the surfaces meet before the orbit goes unstable; below it, the instability comes first and contact follows straight after, during the plunge. Drag the radius across that boundary and watch the wave end earlier: this is why a gravitational wave measures an equation of state.

The detector did not measure the end of the inspiral — it falls at kilohertz frequencies, where the noise is high. What GW170817 measured was the tide. Each star is stretched by its companion, and how much it yields is the deformability Λ = ⅔ k2 (Rc²/Gm)5. A combination of the two, Λ, enters the wave phase, computed here with k2 = 0.09 held fixed. The R5 dependence is what makes the measurement sensitive: one extra kilometre of radius nearly doubles Λ. GW170817 gave Λ ≈ 300, with an upper limit near 700 — and the panel warns when the chosen radius goes beyond it.

The separation comes from Kepler's third law, r = (GM/ωorb²)1/3, which is Newtonian: close to contact it underestimates the real tightening. The mesh is a drawing of the deformation, not a solution of Einstein's equations. And the post-merger is not here — in GW170817 it was not detected.
